Device may put smart TV makers out of business
Called ‘Pocket TV’, it claims to convert your current television into a ‘Smart’ one.
A Dubai-based company is threatening to give major television manufacturers like Samsung, Sony and LG a run for their money as they attempt to change the evolving future of Smart TVs.
While leading electronics companies are spending millions of dollars in developing technologies that can convert their existing ranges of LCDs and LEDs into Smart TVs, a Jumeirah Lake Towers-based company is doing so with a simple pocket-sized dongle.
Called the Pocket TV, it costs $110 (Dh404), though that is being cited as the promotional price.
The smart TV prices range between Dh1,500 for a 32 inch model upto more than Dh10,000 for a top of the range model.
Emax in Dubai said it is selling a Samsung 32 inch Smart TV for Dh1,699 and similar size in Sony with slightly different features for Dh2499.
A top of the range 55” Samsung ES8000 smart TV is priced at Dh12,999.
The Pocket TV claims to be a fully functioning micro-computer and the size of your thumb will enable the user to even turn his old TV (provided it has a HDMI input) into a “smart one”.
The device connects to the TV through the HDMI input and runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and can simply turn your 32-inch (55) TV into an android tablet, with high definition display.
Users can surf the internet, download apps, stream videos and play games. Simply attach a video camera and now use Skype and its video conferencing facility.
Developers of the device have also introduced a supplementary remote control that offers a full QWERTY keyboard as well as a gyroscopic sensor that allows it to operate like a Wii, moving the cursor in sync with your hand movements in space.
Those already in possession of an Android-based smartphone can even use the phone as a remote control using the Google Remote TV app.
You can carry the device in your pocket and convert any TV, even a TV in a hotel room while travelling, into an Android device.
“You’ll have all the benefits that you get from carrying your smartphone but with the ability to display it on a much bigger screen.
“Imagine walking into a meeting and doing a presentation without a laptop. All you need to do is plug the Pocket TV into the projector and your presentation can be played from the cloud (like a Dropbox account) or locally from the SD Card,” the company says in a presentation made on Kickstarter, which they are using to generate funds before they go into production.
With an initial aim of raising $100,000 the project has already earned three times more investment from about 2,300 plus backers.
The deal is on for seven more days on Kickstarter where you can pledge $110, instead of the actual price of $160 for one Pocket TV with a choice of Black, white or red.

Sydney family wins court case against KFC
A SYDNEY father who claimed his daughter was left severely brain damaged from salmonella poisoning after eating a KFC Twister has won a court battle against the fast-food chain.
The family of Monika Samaan brought a multimillion-dollar compensation bid against KFC in the New South Wales Supreme Court, claiming the then seven-year-old became ill after eating the chicken wrap in Sydney's west in 2005.
KFC denied the claim but this afternoon Justice Stephen Rothman found in favour of the family in the NSW Supreme Court.
KFC has vowed to appeal the ruling.
In a statement, the restaurant said the case was clearly tragic but they were "deeply disappointed and surprised" by Judge Rothman's decision.
"We believe the evidence showed KFC did not cause this tragedy and, after reviewing the judgment and seeking further advice from our lawyers, we have decided to appeal Justice Rothman's decision," KFC Australia's chief corporate affairs officer Sally Glover said.
"We feel deeply for Monika and the Samaan family, however, we also have a responsibility to defend KFC's reputation as a provider of safe, high-quality food."
In their statement, KFC did not refer to the judge having made any assessment yet of the damages to be awarded to the family.
During a four-week trial in 2010, Monika's father Amanwial Samaan told the court he and his wife Hanna, son Abanou and Monika all fell ill with vomiting and diarrhoea after sharing the Twister.
Monika, who was in a coma for six months and in hospital for seven, is effectively now a quadriplegic and severely brain damaged.
She took the NSW Supreme Court action through her father.
KFC's lawyer, Ian Barker QC, argued there "never was a shared Twister" because there was no sales data to prove the family purchased it.
"You did not tell anyone at the hospital, when you were there between October 27 and 29, that you had shared a KFC Twister that Monday," Mr Barker said in the NSW Supreme Court in July 2010.
"Because there was no direct question at me," Mr Samaan replied.
He also accused Mr Samaan of thinking KFC "might be an easy target".
But the family's barrister, Anthony Bartley SC, presented evidence about KFC food practices that were "disturbing and unsettling".
"If the store was particularly busy, then even if chicken dropped on the floor... it was on some occasions simply put back into the burger station from where it had fallen," he said.
He told the court Monika, who had been a bright girl, could now feed herself to a limited extent but wears a nappy and goes to a special school.
Her father had given up his job as a forklift driver so he could help look after her.
The judgment was not listed for delivery at the NSW Supreme Court today but a decision was handed down unexpectedly at around 4.30pm, a KFC spokesperson said.
KFC said it would not comment further on the matter as it is now on appeal

ഒരു സ്മാര്ട്ട്ഫോണില് എത്ര മെഗാപിക്സല് ക്യാമറ വേണം. എത്രയെന്ന് വേണമെങ്കിലും നിങ്ങള് പറഞ്ഞോളൂ...അത്തരം എല്ലാ കണക്കുകൂട്ടലും തെറ്റിക്കും നോക്കിയയുടെ പുതിയ ഫോണായ 808 പ്യുവര്വ്യൂ. ബാഴ്സലോണയിലെ മൊബൈല് വേള്ഡ് കോണ്ഗ്രസ്സില് (MWC 2012) ഏവരെയും അമ്പരപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അവതരിപ്പിച്ച ഈ സ്മാര്ട്ട്ഫോണിലേത് 41 മെഗാപിക്സല് ക്യാമറയാണ്!
മൊബൈല് ഇമേജിങ് ഉപകരണങ്ങളുടെ കാര്യത്തില് പുതിയൊരു 'വ്യവസായ നിലവാരം' നിശ്ചയിക്കാന് പോന്നതാകും നോക്കിയ 808 പ്യുവര്വ്യൂ (Nokia 808 PureView) എന്ന് കമ്പനി അവകാശപ്പെടുന്നു. പ്രസിദ്ധമായ 'കാള് സീസ്' (Carl Zeiss) കമ്പനിയാണ് നോക്കിയ ഫോണിനുള്ള 41 മെഗാപിക്സല് സെന്സര് രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.
'പ്യുവര്വ്യൂ ഫോണി'ലെ ക്യാമറ 41 മെഗാപിക്സല് ആണെന്ന് കേള്ക്കുമ്പോള്, പരസ്യബോര്ഡുകളുടെ വലിപ്പമുള്ള ചിത്രങ്ങളേ എടുക്കാനാകൂ എന്ന് കരുതരുത്. എത്ര വലിപ്പത്തിലുള്ള ചിത്രം വേണമെന്ന് ഉപയോക്താവിന് നിശ്ചയിക്കാം- 2 മെഗാപിക്സല്, 3 മെഗാപിക്സല്, 5 മെഗാപിക്സല്, 8 മെഗാപിക്സല്, അല്ലെങ്കില് ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്ന്ന റസല്യൂഷന് എന്നിങ്ങനെ.
'ശരിയായ ഒരു പിക്സലി'ന്റെ പരിധിക്കുള്ളിലേക്ക് ഏഴ് പിക്സലുകള് വരെ സന്നിവേശിപ്പിച്ച് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ മിഴിവും ഗുണമേന്മയും വര്ധിപ്പിക്കാനുള്ള സങ്കേതമാണ് പ്യുവര്വ്യൂ ഫോണിലുള്ളത്. വര്ഷങ്ങളുടെ ഗവേഷണഫലമായാണ് പ്യുവര്വ്യൂ ദൃശ്യസങ്കേതം രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയതെന്ന് നോക്കിയ അവകാശപ്പെടുന്നു. ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ ഗുണമേന്മ, സൂം ചെയ്യുമ്പോഴും ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ മിഴിവ് നഷ്ടമാകാതിരിക്കല്, മങ്ങിയ വെളിച്ചത്തിലും മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട ചിത്രങ്ങള് പകര്ത്താനുള്ള സാധ്യതയൊക്കെ ഈ സങ്കേതം മുന്നോട്ടുവെയ്ക്കുന്നു.

സൂപ്പര്ഫോണ് എന്നുതന്നെ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന ഈ ഫോണിന്റെ പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോം പക്ഷേ നോക്കിയയുടെ സിമ്പിയന് ബെല് (Symbian Belle) ആണെന്നത് പലരും നെറ്റി ചുളിക്കാന് ഇടയാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. വിന്ഡോസ് ഫോണ് പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോം എങ്കിലുമാകേണ്ടതായിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് പലരുടെയും അഭിപ്രായം.
കാരണം, നോക്കിയ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കാന് തീരുമാനിച്ച പഴഞ്ചന് മൊബൈല് പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോം ആണ് സിമ്പിയന്. പകരം മൈക്രോസോഫ്ടിന്റെ വിന്ഡോസ് ഫോണ് ഒഎസിലാകും നോക്കിയയുടെ ഭാവിയെന്ന് കമ്പനി തന്നെ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതാണ്. ആ സ്ഥിതിക്ക് ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു സൂപ്പര്ഫോണ് സിമ്പിയന് ബെല് പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോമില് വേണ്ടിയിരുന്നോ എന്നാണ് ചോദ്യം.
നാലിഞ്ച് അമൊലെഡ് ഡിസ്പ്ലെയാണ് പ്യൂവര്വ്യൂ ഫോണിന്റേത്. പോറല് വീഴാതിരിക്കാന് ഗൊറില്ല ഗ്ലാസ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. 1.3 GHz പ്രൊസസറാണ് ഫോണിന് കരുത്തു പകരുന്നത്. 16ജിബി തനത് മെമ്മറിയുള്ള ഫോണില് 32 ജിബി വരെയുള്ള മൈക്രോഎസ്ഡി കാര്ഡ് ഉപയോഗിക്കാനുമാകും.
2012 മെയ് മാസത്തില് നോക്കിയ 808 പ്യുവര്വ്യൂ വിപണിയിലെത്തും. ലഭ്യമായ വിവരമനുസരിച്ച് നോക്കിയ 808 പ്യുവര്വ്യൂവിന് അമേരിക്കയില് 760 ഡോളറായിരിക്കും വില; ഇന്ത്യയില് ഏതാണ്ട് 34000 രൂപയും.
വിന്ഡോസ് ഫോണ് 7 ല് പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന ലൂമിയ 610, സിമ്പിയന് പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോമില് പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന ആഷ 202, ആഷ 203, ആഷ 302 എന്നീ ഫോണുകളും മൊബൈല് കോണ്ഗ്രസില് നോക്കിയ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.

വയനാട് ചുരം കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച കരിന്തണ്ടന് ചിത്രരൂപം
കല്പറ്റ: കൊടുംവളവുകളും അഗാധഗര്ത്തങ്ങളുമായി വയനാട് ചുരം കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച ആജാനുബാഹുവായ ആദിവാസി കരിന്തണ്ടന് ഒടുവില് ചിത്രരൂപം. വന്യമൃഗങ്ങള് നിറഞ്ഞ വന്മലയിലൂടെ വയനാട്ടിലേക്ക് കടക്കാന് പാത കണ്ടെത്താനാകാതെ വിഷമിച്ച ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരെ സഹായിച്ചത് ആദിവാസി പണിയ വിഭാഗത്തിലെ കരിന്തണ്ടനായിരുന്നു.
ഇടതൂര്ന്ന വനത്തില് കാലികളെ മേക്കുന്ന കരിന്തണ്ടന് കാനനവഴികള് സുപരിചിതം. ആദിവാസികളുടെ പാരമ്പര്യവഴികള് കാണിച്ചുകൊടുത്തതോടെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് എന്ജിനീയര്മാര് ഇതിലൂടെ ചുരംപാത പണിതു. വയനാട്ടിലേക്ക് ദുര്ഘടപാത കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചതിന്റെ ബഹുമതി തങ്ങള്ക്കു നഷ്ടമാകുമെന്നതിനാല് ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാര് കരിന്തണ്ടനെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തി. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഓര്മക്കായാണ് ലക്കിടിയില് ചങ്ങലമരം സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.
കൊലപാതകശേഷം ചുരത്തിലൂടെ യാത്രചെയ്യുന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരെ കരിന്തണ്ടന്റെ ആത്മാവ് നിരന്തരം പേടിപ്പെടുത്തിയതിനാല് ആത്മാവിനെ ചങ്ങലയില് ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചതാണെന്ന ഐതിഹ്യവുമുണ്ട്. പണിയ വിഭാഗത്തില്പെട്ട യുവാവ് ആദിവാസി മൂപ്പനായിരുന്നുവെന്നും കാലക്രമേണ കരിന്തണ്ടന് എന്ന പേര് വീഴുകയായിരുന്നുവെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ചങ്ങലമരവും ചുരവുമൊക്കെയായി പ്രശസ്തനാണെങ്കിലും കരിന്തണ്ടന് ഇതുവരെ ചിത്രരൂപമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ഗോത്രവിഭാഗങ്ങള്ക്കിടയില് പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന 'പീപ്പ്' എന്ന സന്നദ്ധസംഘടന ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടതനുസരിച്ച് മൂന്ന് വര്ഷത്തെ പ്രയത്നത്തിനൊടുവില് താമരശ്ശേരി സ്വദേശിയായ പടിഞ്ഞാറത്തറയിലെ ആര്ട്ടിസ്റ്റ് അയ്യപ്പനാണ് ചിത്രം തയാറാക്കിയത്.
അടിവാരം, ചിപ്ലിത്തോട്, പഴയവൈത്തിരി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില് കരിന്തണ്ടന്റെ വംശപരമ്പരയുണ്ട്. ഇവിടത്തെ കാരണവന്മാരില്നിന്നാണ് കരിന്തണ്ടന്റെ രൂപഭാവങ്ങള് കിട്ടിയത്. നാലര അടി ഉയരവും മൂന്നര അടി വീതിയുമുള്ള ഓയില് പെയ്ന്റിങ്ങില് കരിന്തണ്ടന്റ ബലിഷ്ഠ രൂപം തീര്ക്കാന് മൂന്നുമാസമെടുത്തു. ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ രൂപരേഖ ആദിവാസി കാരണവന്മാരെ കാണിച്ച് വേണ്ട മാറ്റങ്ങള് വരുത്തി. സായ്പ്പിന് വഴികാട്ടിക്കൊടുത്ത് ചുരം കയറി വന്ന് ഗാംഭീര്യത്തോടെ നില്ക്കുന്ന കരിന്തണ്ടനാണ് ചിത്രത്തില്.
മുറുക്കാന് ചവക്കല്, കടുക്കന്, മുടി, പട്ടുംവളയും, അരക്കെട്ട് തുണി, ശരീര ഘടന എന്നിവക്കെല്ലാം പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. താന് അവസാനം അപകടത്തില്പെടുമെന്ന വിശ്വാസം കരിന്തണ്ടനുണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്നും ചിത്രത്തിലെ മുഖഭാവത്തില് അത് വ്യക്തമാണെന്നും അയ്യപ്പന് മാസ്റ്റര് പറഞ്ഞു.
മാര്ച്ച് 11ന് ആദിവാസികള് ചുരത്തില് കരിന്തണ്ടന് സ്മൃതിയാത്ര നടത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. ലക്കിടിയില്നിന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന കാല്നടയാത്ര വൈകുന്നേരം നാലരയോടെ ലക്കിടി ചങ്ങലമരത്തില് സമാപിക്കും. വയനാട് ചുരത്തിന് 'കരിന്തണ്ടന് ചുരം' എന്ന് പേരിടുക, കരിന്തണ്ടന് പ്രതിമ സ്ഥാപിക്കുക എന്നീ ആവശ്യങ്ങളുയര്ത്തുന്ന യാത്രയില് 500 ആദിവാസികള് പങ്കെടുക്കും.
